Clem's giant Chinese abacus |
This photo is not the way
it is because of lens foreshortening. This a really a giant
Chinese abacus. It was made for me in Kuching in 2019 out of
local hardwood. The wood is not varnished - I have simply
treated with a timber oil. This is the first time since 2020
that it has been out of storage.
It is a 2/5 type abacus
(with 2 beads in the upper deck and 5 beads on the lower deck).
On the lower deck going from right to left, each row is for
counting 1s, 10s, 100s, 1000s and so on. On the upper deck,
going from right to left, each row is for counting 5s, 50s,
500s, 5000s and so on. I think I have set the abacus to read
191,155. |
