Serian Wet/Daily Markets

The Serian Wet/Daily markets
is a great place to look for native produce.
Here, jungle fern (midin) is available absolutely fresh from picking.

More unusual are these freshwater molluscs.

Two different species waiting for the connoisseur gastronaut.

Even more exotic are these live sago worms.
They sell for RM1 each!

Dr Stephen and Sidney visit a hardwood handcraft stall.
Natives from Bintangor (some 300 km from Serian) have brought their hand made
cutting boards, mortar & pestle, and scoops sculptured out of Sarawakian hardwoods
to sell. The largest cutting boards sell for RM250 - 280 depending on wood type).
The different colors of the woods are due to the type of wood and whether
they have been oiled (with cooking oils say the purveyors).

I bought a small scoop (oiled) which I will use with my mini rice cooker. It is made from Sarawak Keranji wood.
The three wood samples below the scoop are from a boxed set of some 50 Sarawak woods which was presented to me by the Sarawak Timber Association many years ago.
L-R: Belian, Selangan Batu, and Keranji.

Selangan Batu (Shorea spp.):
