It is late in the evening although the twilight brightness dispels that - Edinburgh being well north of the the country does not see sunsets until about 11 pm. This is a gentrified area of old industrial Edinburgh.
The Union Canal running from Falkirk to Edinburgh was built to convey minerals and coal to the the latter.
