Characteristics of a real university.

"The Real University - A Personal View"
A lecture given for university orientation day.

The view of the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee. Characteristics defined by act of parliament.

What is academic freedom? Here is one view, here is another and here is a definition by act of parliament. Ignorance of this key concept is not limited to those outside the university environment. Founded in 1915, the American Association of University Professors defends academic freedom and tenure, advocates collegial governance, and develops policies ensuring due process. A real university values academic freedom (Art. 1.2 UWA Code of Ethics). Intellectual independence (academic freedom) and the nature of universities.

Some differences between lecturers and teachers.

Is education a service and deliverable?

Universities are not the real world so why is there a push to subject them to market forces?
