My carpentry gear is in Sydney, but here with a small hand sander (Makita) bought yesterday and several grades of sanding paper, I removed the original matt black varnish until  the desired distressed look was visible. The wood was then oiled with Otter Semi-Transparent Oil Stain in Ultra Black. It is the only brand of oil stain I could find here.
