Hindu temple at Matang/Gunung Serapi
. |
The renovated Sri Maha Mariamman temple (believed to be first built more than
136 years ago and due to be re-opened in June 2011). The fine carving in belian
sourced
from the surrounding jungle was done by craftsmen from India. This preserves the
original design of the temple which remains the only Sri Maha Mariamman temple
in the
world to be constructed out of wood. The temple was built for the needs of the
plantation workers from India who served in the Matang coffee/tea estate
established
around this site.
